Jim, you ask me what I would call the new position I described in our “new” political party. The Boss, works for me, but hey , I don’t know. The President is an impotent position except for his veto power. But other than that all he can do is rant and rave. He is only as powerful as his backing from his own party. He wields no power on his own to pass legislation. His power is in waging war, or at least fomenting one, and his access to the public forum of print and broadcast media is a plus in trying to direct public opinion. In every other way all he tends to be is a giant target and great cartoon character. The guy you blame when shit hits the fan. It is why I was giving the job away, I would never want it. We need people willing to forget the two party system. Who the hell put them in charge anyway? We have to look at taking care of our own. Forget giving 68 billion dollars to an Egyptian because he pretends to be friendly to our interests. I don’t care if it gives us a free pass to the Suez, or if it helps Israel. I have already stated what I think we should do about terrorism. I think instead of propping up governments like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Iraq, and on and on, we should make sure no children are hungry, everyone is getting a great education at home in a safe environment, the same medical services are available to everyone, and I could go on forever. Gangs, crime, dope, immigration, secure borders, all of these things could be had or at least vastly improved if the money we use to prop up foreign powers was used to prop up ourselves. We stay strong, treat the rest of the planet and countries with respect, but stomp on them hard if they support terrorism or harm an American. I know, isolationism, so what! If you make it profitable to deal with us, they will. Money talks and bullshit, is just that, bullshit! We need to make sure we are #1 in education, not second to last. We need to use our resources to stay in the forefront of technology. We need to lead the world in trade innovation, not just following the trend. You know who best fits that criteria right now? Well it’s China, and in another 20 years we will not even be in the top ten of dominate nations on the planet. If I knew how to bring about the change, hey I would not keep it a secret, but alas I am as impotent as the President in this regard. I guess the best we can do is keep talking and staying engaged, just in case the opportunity arises to be some small part of the solution.

Dear California State Senators;

I am writing to remind you that there is a large voting block of baby boomers out there who have some very serious concerns, I am one of the afore mentioned boomers. It is true that we are all coming of an age to draw on Social Security. It is also true that you, yes both of you, have gone along with the standard response that because of that fact, funding may have to be curtailed. You also state that Social Security will run out of funds altogether in the near future. Well, that is true as far as it goes, but is the same as a lie when you only tell half the truth, which is all those statements are. You need to also admit, publicly, that the same swell of baby boomers ageing into the Social Security system is the same swell of taxpayers that have been paying into it and creating a huge surplus in the fund. A surplus, and then some, that was borrowed by the federal government by issuing bonds payable to the fund. It is those bonds that are coming due that the government cannot afford to pay back. We the people, the very ones you represent, do not want to be the ones to pay for the mismanagement of the fund by our previous so called representatives. We expect you, who are duly sworn to represent us, the people, not your party, not your backers, but what we the people want. It is your job, the only one you are supposed to be doing. I am not saying you are not, but I would like to hear one politician stand up and report the whole story, not the one your cronies or your party want. I need my Social Security. I have been paying into it since I was around 14, and I have been working ever since. We could not live on Social Security alone, what I will receive would not pay rent in So. Cal., never mind food, insurance, drugs, utilities, clothes, and all of the rest of the cost of living. Even so, if my wife and I do not die at exactly the same time, the other one is in dire trouble. I know you do not think so, but most of your constituency is in the same boat. We did not save enough, we lived from pay check to pay check our whole lives. I worked as a mechanic/foreman for the same entity for 30 years, but there was no insurance, no 401k, or anything else besides a basic wage. I did manage to put some away, I was not a complete idiot, but it will go quickly. Most of it already was used to make sure my daughter, who is now a teacher was able to get her Masters. So now, I depend on you to look out for what is left of my life.

Point number two. A lot of us think that our representatives need to find a way to make it unconstitutional for the federal govt. to spend more money than they take in. The debt has gone ballistic, and will be a sore spot for possibly generations. The first thing on the block is Social Security and Medicare, because they cost the most. I do not think you should allow us to die before our time from lack of medical care or basic living conditions. In short, I do not think you should kill Americans by curtailing our services so that you can afford to kill foreigners you don’t like. Sticky wicket you say, of course it is. You have to find a way to go after and defeat terrorists, I get that. I think we are going to have to do it without trying to tame whole countries however. We are going to have to train a military force that is very well trained technically and equipped to perform surgical strikes against terrorists regardless of where they are, and we are going to have to do it in places where we are not going to get the cooperation or permission from the country we find them in. Both the country we have just fought a war in, and the country we are now concentrating on will backslide as soon as we leave. A waste of money and resources. We will have to prop them up forever, using the money and resources needed to house, feed, and care for people right here. I know I am not telling you anything you don’t know. What I am saying is that you need to get in touch with who we really are. We are not as well off as you might think, and a visit once or twice a year to make it look like you care, but still spouting the same half truths will not get it anymore. I hear a lot of talk about just voting out incumbents as a matter course until someone starts to get the message that you do not represent a political party or any certain groups of individuals. You cannot just do what perpetrates you and your party’s continued existence, as hard as that is.

You will have to figure out a way to tax the rich and the poor, fairly. I don’t think certain oil companies need to make billions in profits per reporting period. You can do it if your honest about what needs to be done without worrying about anyone but we the people or who you are going to alienate in the process. Just my humble opinion.

Sincerely,

John Love

Hi everyone, I could have written another blog, but only Jim would have read it, so I am going to inflict myself on you by email and the blog. The politicians are messing with servicemen and social security again. They are planning to reduce retirement benefits for both. Not touching theirs, by the way! The baby boomers are here and drawing out a lot more money from social security right now, but we were also here for the last 65 odd years paying into the social security fund in the same larger numbers. It has nothing to with baby boomers. When all the boomers were of working age and paying into the fund it had a trillion dollar surplus, yeah, I said trillion!  The feds took from the fund to get the post office out of the red, more than once. They “borrowed” money from it to pay down the national debt just before an election year, more than once, and even more robberies, fraud, and theft by the federal government took place! None of which it paid back! Social Security did not go broke, it is the victim of theft and fraud by the very politicians who now want to steal from us again. If I had all the money I have put into it, plus interest, I would be a multi-millionaire and so would you. The feds reaped all the benefits, now that it’s time to pay the piper, they are putting on the masks and hoods and will rob us again if we let them! Actually they issued special Treasury bonds as collateral, which are due to  be paid back to Social Security starting in 2018, which they now can’t afford to do!  Of course they are not telling you that,  they just keep talking about the baby boomers.  Social Security has generated a surplus of over 1.5 Trillion Dollars, all of which has been “borrowed”  by the federal govt. Write your congressman, tell them what you think!

Medicare is also on the chopping block because it is a huge chunk of the federal budget. I can’t make the claim that it is money owed us that we have paid in, so harder to defend. I just know that you wind up living on a fixed income about the same time your body starts demanding some attention. Doctors and drugs cost way more than most of us can afford to pay, even with medical insurance. Insurance we will not be able to afford on the pittance they pay even now, forget about reduced benefits. I am a former Marine, so I support servicemen 100%. What I can’t support is two wars if it means I have to live in the streets and die early because they need my monthly income to pay down the huge debt they are building up. Both Afghanistan and Iraq will revert to type in a year, two tops, after we pull out. Sorry, but that is a most likely scenario. I think we have to quit fighting wars for other countries, and just fight terrorism itself. I know, I know, your going to say that we have to get rid of the regimes that support the terrorists. That is true, but since everyone hates us anyway, I say quit fighting wars we can’t win in the long run, at least without a presence in those countries for at least two generations! Go for the terrorists wherever they are, I mean in force in whatever countries, cave ,or luxory resort we think they are hanging out in. I mean we don’t ask permission, we go wherever we know them to be and kill or arrest them. Might have to play a different tune in countries who can kick our behinds with a few well placed nukes, (Thinking of Russia, not North Korea), but after they see how effective we can be against terrorism I think they will join the cause, once we stop pretending that some countries are our allies who are not. I mean come on, Pakistan actively gives support and lodging to a multitude of terrorist. Meanwhile they accept huge amounts of money from us to help combat terrorism, smiling at us like little children as they pass it on to, guess who?

I know there are lots of holes in this theory, but at least it would free up money at home. We have our own starving and homeless children. We have gangs that control parts of our largest cities, elderly living on scraps, people dying unnecessarily from either medical abuse at the hands of accountants, or no medical treatment at all. We should be ashamed that any of this happens in America. Treat gangs as terrorists and make it a national priority.  Social Security has been pre-paid by most Americans, it is money owed us that we are already not being paid back at an equitable rate! Politicians keep claiming that we are running out of money to fund it because of us baby boomers. As I pointed out, we also paid into it at the same increased rate. Now if you want to support legislation that gives Americans the same health care as politicians have given themselves, or taking away  pensions for as little as one term in office, paid out in their fifties, unlike what they want for us, I can and will support that! They want us to wait until we are 69 before we can draw Social Security. This is a bill already in consideration and favored by the soon to be new congress. It will likely be passed. It reduces benefits and makes you wait until a week before you die to apply. We boomers are still out there in large numbers, politicians need to know their career is over if they do not put a stop to this fraud! Write, call, complain, be pro-active, or don’t complain when you lose whats yours!

If this offends you, or you think I am wrong, well you know where to reach me. If you would prefer I did not bother you with such drivel, just say so in a return email and I will remove you from my email list. If you want to disagree or add to anything, feel free. I normally vent in a blog, but I know from experience that most will not bother to access it, so I decided I needed an audience of baby boomers, you got nominated!

John Love

The Forgotten Terrorists

The Forgotten Terrorists

We have foreign based terrorists which we spend billions trying to identify and eradicate, a necessary if unfortunate use of our nation’s time and resources. Next we have domestic terrorists which we also have expended a tremendous amount of energy and resource to locate and eradicate before they can do harm, or capture after the fact if that is the unfortunate circumstance. We have, in my opinion, left out a major group of terrorists, and for an unforgivable reason. That reason as unthinkable as it might be is because 99% of their terrorism is directed at a segment of American society we do not care about, so do not attach any importance to it as a nation, but leave local law enforcement to deal with it, a force hampered by scarce manpower, available resources, and restricted by laws designed to protect the average citizen and not to combat terrorism. These groups of terrorists are commonly known as gangs. They are prevalent throughout the world, but thrive in a country which is supposed to be the champion of the oppressed. So why is a huge and organized group of individuals who murder, bomb, kill innocents to intimidate rivals or law enforcement, and who support these activities with gun and drug smuggling, kidnapping and slave trade, the slave trade which consists mainly of young girls sold for sex, not classified as terrorists by the federal government? A group who has killed more innocent people in the U.S. than the most successful of terrorists! Who smuggle in more arms and drugs into this country every day than any labeled terrorist cell or organization so that their reign of terror can be continued unabated. Some gangs are organized nationwide, they run our prisons from within, and control large areas of our cities through bribes, intimidation, murder, drug addiction, prostitution, and all out war to attain their objectives. Yet we nationally do nothing except to offer up empty promises prior to reelection campaigns! Why, because these atrocities are primarily aimed at a segment of our population we do not care about, people who have no advocates, no resources to fight back. Our attitude seems to be, let them kill each other off, than there will be less for us to have to worry about. Shame on you, shame on me!
Gangs in America are and should be classified as domestic terrorists. Federal backing and the FBI should be out in full force backing up local law enforcement to crack down on these terrorist cells in every city in our country. The laws that have been changed to allow us to more effectively combat terrorism should automatically be applied to any gang member. Troops should be employed to stop any gang war, track down and capture any known gang members. It should be made clear that becoming a member of a gang or participating in gang activities automatically makes you a domestic terrorist and a fugitive from federal justice. As I said, gangs murder more people, smuggle in more drugs and illegal weaponry than the most prolific of recognized domestic terrorists! Huge segments of American populations are subjected to living in fear and hopelessness, much the same as people living in Afghanistan, who were and still are to a large degree terrorized by the Taliban. We champion their cause, so why do we leave huge segments of our own society at the mercy of groups of individuals who fit perfectly into the mold of terrorists? Apathy and a concerted effort by most of us to forget these populations ever existed is most probable. The unforgiveable truth is that the poor do not get the same protections as the affluent in America. Politicians only care long enough to garner votes, then a thin pretense of caring, but no time or energy spared for a group that cannot contribute to the coffers of their continued success as a politician. Politicians only represent themselves and the party that supports them, no one else unless they have a lobbyist who is backed by a lot of available revenue! So the most prolific terrorists on the planet are ignored by state and federal politicians because their targets are people who have little effect on whether or not they are successful, and for all the reasons listed in this article, a shameful yet true fact about America. All gangs, in all cities, big or small, should be labeled terrorist by the federal government and be targeted as intensely as any terrorist organization on the planet. The fact that we have not already done so points out that we are not the America we purport to be, we are actually supporting a terrorist organization by allowing it to thrive within our borders, one of the largest and most prolific domestic terrorist organizations to ever exist! We are not the only governments guilty of such a crime, and for exactly the same reasons. Until we get politicians who are asked to represent the people instead of themselves, their party, and large lobbying entities, we are doomed as a country. We will never solve poverty, hunger, inner city crime, or terrorism. The gap between the privileged and the underprivileged will get larger and larger until we will not be able to describe ourselves as a democracy. I think the advent of ignored terrorism is the best example that what I say is fact. We have to vote anyone out of office that twists facts, is not transparent, who takes anything from lobbyists, who wheels and deals in the backrooms of congress, who in short is disconnected from the population he or she is supposed to represent. The politicians need to know these are the reasons we are not voting for them. We the people still outnumber the rich and powerful as a voting block, even though they are the only ones actually being represented by our politicians. We have to get rid of the electoral vote; in this day and age its only value is for its ability to remove the power of our votes. It was initially instituted because huge segments of the population were illiterate, isolated, and uninformed. In this day and age with everyone who can walk and talk having or owning a worldwide communication device, the need for the electoral vote does not exist. When this is abolished only those individuals who we actually vote for can come to office. We then need to act as one and steadfastly remove from office those that represent any entity except we the people. I guaranty you that gangs will then be addressed as a major threat to national security and the security of its citizens, as it will be those citizens in control of their representatives in an actual true democracy. It is all up to us, we can’t wait for someone else to do it. We also need candidates willing to run on such a platform, and stand by it after elected, so we can show our support for such an individual, even though they might only have enough money for one commercial at election time, we need to look at the record and vote accordingly, not be swayed by lies, twisted truths, and outright misrepresentations of the facts in use by all political ads televised or in print in our modern society! In other words we cannot be lazy voters; our citizenship has to be the most important product of our American life. If not, we get just what we deserve, which is what we are getting now!

John.love@live.com   I fought for it, still haven’t got it, don’t want to say that about our boys serving today!

I am writing this blog in response to an ABC program hosted by Christiane Amanpour on the subject , along with a discussion of the placement of the Mosque in New York City 2 ½ blocks from ground zero.

She had a panel made up of sensible people to her left, and a group of extremists purporting to represent Christianity and the American way on her right.  Good thing she had the sense to know which was which and keep them separated, or they would have come to blows!  Of course anytime you mention any person who believes implicitly in any form of religion, you can automatically assume you are talking to an extremist.

Ok, here is may take on the subject. I am an Earthling, no better or worse than any other Earthling, and that is my religion. I have a Bible; it is printed on a post-it note. Its message and complete doctrine are contained there. It is as follows: Treat everyone in all scenarios exactly in the manner that you yourself want to be treated, period!  It is worded a little differently in the Bible, but as most of you are packing a King James version, be aware, Jesus did not talk like that, semi ancient Englishmen did. So now you’re thinking too short, to simple. It is exactly why it is the only thing that will ever work. As soon as you add anything else, someone will disagree, and being human, will eventually try to convert you to their opinion, or kill you off if they can’t.

Do Islamic extremists exist, of course they do, and practically everyone in the civilized world witnessed the absolute proof of that!  Are there other groups of extremists out there? You bet, I can even tell you by what name a few of them go by.  One of the biggest extremists of the Christian faith is none other than the Reverend Franklin Graham, the son of Billy, a man, who it just so happens, I have met briefly twice in my youth. Mr. Billy Graham was a little wiser than his son.  An accurate comparison might be, oh say, Einstein and a really smart chimpanzee! He condemned every religion; actually he condemned every human on the planet to eternal damnation if they did not believe exactly as he did.  Is that not the exact description of the Islamic extremist’s message? Yes, it is, exactly!!

What exactly did you think the crusades or the Inquisition would be called if they had happened in more modern times? Both were carried out in the name of the Christian faith, so let’s say, oh yeah, extremists carrying out a Christian jihad!  Absolutely no difference, they just used a guillotine or Knights with swords instead of aircraft, the modern weapons of their time. We will not even go into the genocide the Christian controlled military from multiple countries perpetrated on the peoples of the Americas. I dare you to find an existing Inca civilization, the largest to ever exist in pre Columbian America, or an Aztec empire, who, after they destroyed their entire civilization, built Mexico City on top of the rubble of the old capital.  This was done by a country still controlled by one of the most powerful sects of Christianity ever to exist, whose name I won’t print, but whose identity you all know!

So is everyone going to convert to calling themselves Earthlings with its very simple Bible? Nope, not unless I force them or kill off the ones I can’t force! See the problem? We just need to use common sense. The Moslems are going to have to quit teaching an extreme form of their religion. They are going to have to quit teaching the next generation of their youth that the west is evil and has to be conquered by any means necessary.  We have to do the same, because Christian faith for example, preaches the exact same doctrine to our youth. You accept Christ and follow his teachings as written down by a bunch of old English dudes who thought the Earth was the center of the universe, and flat as a pancake to boot, or burn in hell for eternity. And just like Islamic extremists, have condemned the entire population of the planet to damnation if they don’t believe exactly  as they do!

Do I believe that they should build a Mosque so near the site of the Trade Center attack? I think it might be in poor taste, but if we are to honor the tenants of our constitution and what America is supposed to stand for, then we have to fight for their right to express themselves whenever and wherever they want.  An even better idea, make it even bigger, and call it a multicultural religious center, dedicated to the cooperation of all faiths, with all of the various religions represented under one roof. It would then be, in my opinion, perfectly placed as close to the 911 site as possible!

In conclusion, you have to have an educated world that is plugged into each other. You have to combat poverty, hunger, and the lack of schools, hospitals, educators, and doctors. You have to do this in an atmosphere of peace. So have we got our work cut out for us? You can bet your —, well you know!  I think the only way to start this work is to first start thinking of ourselves as Earthlings as I said before. As long as we isolate ourselves by culture and religion, we will never be able to solve this planet’s problems. And look, you are already thinking like an extremist. You’re going to tell me that I have to believe in God and Jesus, or Jehovah, or Allah, or Buddha, or whatever, or I am going to some place dark and dank, or bright and on fire, forever.  I personally don’t subscribe to any of the religions currently at my disposal. I am not agnostic, I am still asking questions, making up my mind, but in the meantime, I take the Ten Commandments seriously.  I do not believe, because I believe differently than you, that that condemns me or you, and why, no matter what we believe, the Earthling concept cannot be part and parcel to what we have decided is our belief system. For if we are not forcing ourselves on each other, than the worst that can happen is to feel sorry for those that do not believe as you do because they will not go to whatever heaven you believe in. So you can have a healthy debate about it, try and win over as many converts as you can, as long as you remember you are talking to an Earthling who you are going to treat exactly  as you want to be treated while this debate is going on. If we cannot get over the notion that we have to force everyone to believe as we do, we really are doomed. I believe we will eventually grow up, and out of this foolish pride and selfishness. It just bothers me that people who have run for president in the past, and will run in the future, believe as Reverend Graham does, and thinks they need to force people to conform to their way of thinking. All that does is kill people, so I hope that we grow up and mature quickly! I am really tired of educated, but unintelligent people making decisions that affect the lives of all Earthlings! See how that works?

Education in America

The Extinction of Education in America

By John Love

The education process in America, for most, has come to resemble a stagnant pond. You can still call it a pond, but the water in it does not improve, but gradually decays until it is no more than a swamp.

Our politicians do not get it, could not care less is what I believe. If you have money, and plenty of it, you can still buy your children a decent education. It is all, the public system even more so, bogged down by tests that are supposed to prove that the teachers are doing their job and have been able to convince the students to do theirs. They do not, I repeat, in no way do any of the tests now required by our governing entities accurately provide them with any information that actually depicts what is going on in most classrooms. The only thing it does do is take away almost half a day, every day, from studies that would advance a child’s education. Instead, teachers are forced to concentrate on studies that are only aimed at passing these government mandated tests. Otherwise, the teachers themselves are deemed inferior and the children substandard. The classroom time that teachers used to use to excite the imagination or to teach them to think for themselves is gone! They barely have enough time to teach the basics alongside the extravagant amount of time they must spend making sure test scores are as high as possible on the mandated material. The students are not well rounded educationally as a result. If you have been enrolled in a public school, in California for example, you are in deep, well let just say you have fallen in what us country folk call a two holer. I will explain.

I live in Garden Grove California, a suburb of Disneyland for those of us who are geographically challenged. The population living here who speak English, as their first language, is a minority. There are huge populations who were not raised in America and English is their second language, if they speak it at all. A prime example locally is we have a huge population from Mexico, and still arriving in droves. I am making no statement about illegal’s here. I am pointing out that a large portion of these people are here to climb out of poverty, save all the money they can, then move back to Mexico with enough money to open a business and thrive. I am sure I would do the same for my family if need be. For this reason, unfortunately, a lot them do not bother to learn any more English than is necessary, and here in this area they can get along just fine speaking Spanish. However their children are in our classrooms, along with a huge population of other newcomers to our land. They can be extremely intelligent, and most are, but they are not equipped to pass the afore mentioned tests.

Now, at least locally, and I imagine most likely everywhere, school districts tend to have the children who do not read and speak the language well, in classes with teachers who are trained to help them accelerate the learning curve. I am acquainted with teachers who have a Masters in reading and teach English to classes of students comprised of just such individuals. Do you begin to see a problem? They also tend to get the student who has a learning disability, or just does not want to be in school! If you are this teacher, and he or she is going to be evaluated based on how well their students do based on the mandated testing, you can see that the evaluation for this particular group of teachers is not going to be accurate. They need to test these children at the beginning of the school year, and then retest at the end so an accurate evaluation can be ascertained. In addition, the children with documented learning disabilities should not be included in any data used to evaluate the learning curve or value of a teacher, but that is not being done. Just something else that seems anyone with any common sense would see, but alas, the way is naught.

Now for a problem at the state and local level, a problem that directly reflects on the quality of education at a public school, if it was not bad enough already. Most states are in financial difficulty, California is one of the worst hit by the recession. One of the first things they did was to cut education. They laid off thousands of teachers with they already had crowded classroom conditions. Not long after that, they implemented a furlough program where the state rank and file employee was told not to come to work for so many days a month with no pay to cut down on expenses. A lot of them are losing their homes, or are having to leave jobs and go to the private sector if they are able. Of course, they lose health insurance and their retirement plans are in that two holer I keep talking about. It is either that or lose their homes and hang in there hoping for a miracle. The state politicians could care less. They voted themselves a raise just recently, and you do not want to get me started on state or federal congressional retirement plans, I would blow a gasket and use language my Bible Belt readers would not appreciate. Getting back to the furlough issue, they included teachers! Now how ignorant do you possibly have to be to not understand that classroom instruction must be congruent. In the case of the teacher who has a Masters degree that qualifies them to be of help to a classroom of people who have a second language or other disability, just who is teaching them when this teacher is off on furlough days. No one is, the children are also furloughed, which means they are not going to school for even the minimum amount of required days. These are already at risk children, and now they go to school with reduced attendance?  I happen to know for a fact that the teacher I know personally in this situation was hired specifically because of her training and experience in this area. I also know she is the only teacher with these credentials at that school. So what happens to these children who now have no continuity of instruction, who are already at risk, and now have to try and remember what, when, and what was said, how many days ago? I would really like to throw in a swear word here, but I will just refer to the afore mentioned two holer. The teachers at this particular school were told by the new principle that they are not allowed on campus on furlough days. Now everyone knows teaching is not a nine to five job. Every teacher I know, and there are many, come in on weekends, stay late during the week, come in on holidays to catch up on research, grade papers, anything to get a jump on the next week and be better prepared for the students. This particular teacher was not even going to see her students for three days after school starts up. This rule was brought up when she volunteered to show up with no pay on a furlough day so the students would not suffer. None of this would be an issue if the idiots who included teachers in the furlough program actually had a brain and knew how to use it. Politicians for the most part are not in sync with the people they represent. They will not cut any program that effects them or those that pay to keep them in power, so the rank and file suffer.  Do I have a remedy, sorry, no! I can offer a suggestion, I believe the teachers should have to be tested not the kids if the government wants proof that they are qualified. This would leave out the second language problem, the learning disability problem, and the gangbanger who just does not care, out of the equation.  Surprisingly, the teachers I polled were almost unanimous in their agreement. I could also say to vote the idiots out of office, but whenever I try, I just manage to vote for another idiot. Just keep this in mind; education is the spring that keeps this country ticking. Without it, we fall by the wayside. If you check, in the developed countries, we are way down the list when it comes to education. If we do not start paying attention, and demanding our government representatives do the same, we will pay for it dearly, and not all that far in the future!

Any comments, please feel free to include them, I will include my email in case you want to make a more personal comment.

Graduated CHS 1968 and entered Boise State fall of same year. Ran out of tuition money early in second semester. False pride would not let me ask for help from Doc Edwards, who later chewed me a new one for not asking. Instead I joined the Marine Corps for four years instead of two, so I could qualify for their Airwing program and schools. Became an avionics electrician.

Spent four years working on EA6A Grumman Electronic Warfare Aircraft.   I spent over two tours in WestPac, and about three years overseas in total. I was the NCOIC of the Avionics shop as a sergeant for most of my Nam time.

I came back from Nam, got spit on at the San Francisco airport, and found out just how unpopular that war really was.  I was restrained by both Army and Navy personnel or a civilian would have suffered some severe chastisement.  I got a little training seminar right there in the airport about how things really were.

I went to work as a mechanic, knowing nothing at first, but stayed with that business for 30 years as Service Manager, Master Mechanic Certification, Unlimited Smog Tech, and part time instructor of computer and five gas analysis.  Was pretty much a wild child, rode the local endur0 dirt bike circuit for about 15 years, was the crew chief of # 66, a circle jet boat that in five years won the NJBA National Championship four times with second place once.

I always had intended to go back to school but other than trade schools for electronics and automotive computer and drivability schools, so I could get an unlimited Smog License for test and repair in California, I never did.

I met and married my wife Vivian in March of 1976; she calmed the wild child down a bit. We had Kelly the next year, who has been everything a daughter could be.

Vivian retired from AT&T a few years back; Kelly graduated from Cal State at Long Beach with her BA, started teaching and graduated from Cal State Fullerton with her Masters last year. She is teaching students in advanced English and reading, and her specialty, children whose second language is English.  Believe me in So Cal that is a lot of students.

After my first boss retired after 30 years, I was hired as Service Mgr for a group of construction equipment dealerships. I have been there the last 7 years, I like the company, even though the economy has wrecked the construction industry her in So Cal.

Still healthy, still ride 1900 CC’s of chrome and horsepower daily except when it is rainy. I still go in the dirt, but I do it with a 4×4 and camera now. Will probably have to retire this year if the economy doesn’t improve drastically, and that’s it for now!

Talking about Thanks Council

Thanks Council

To Council

I had a life reminder this last year, so I have been taking stock . I have been lamenting some setbacks and the fact that I have not gotten to do some of the things I want to do as of yet.  I know some of us have gotten hit by the economic crunch, I have two 401 K’s in the cellar myself, all the more reason to celebrate life, not dwell on the negative!  Everyone can find something to be thankful for. I, for one, am thankful that I had the chance to grow up with a group of people as special as the ones that peopled Council Idaho when I was a teenager.

When I was eleven years old I ran away from my stepfather and mother. Can’t call it running away from home, there was no such thing for me in those days. I went back after 3 days, watched until I knew they were both sleeping one off, and then took my sister with me. It is a long story but I convinced my stepfathers father, a Pentecostal minister, that if he did not hid us out until they gave up looking, I would run away and no one would ever find me. He knew why I had run, so he agreed. All it took was his telling my supposed parents that he would find us, and care for us and that they could go to California as they had planned, and off they went the same day, not a care in the world. They didn’t get worried or pissed off until the social security money they used to stay in liquor, without too much work involved, dried up because the people I was staying with had applied for it. Good church going people, the kind that are convinced it is their goal in life to “save” wretched wicked sinners such as myself. Any deviation from the Ten Commandments and a long list of other commandments, pages long, resulted in the wicked sinner getting a good beating with a paddle made special just for me. It took a year of planning to run this time, since I lived 90 miles down a canyon that had to be traveled before the next small village came into view.  A mountain and then Hells Canyon one side, a protected wilderness area 600 miles across, not roads, not even fire trails allowed on the other, so yes it took a year. It had been drilled into me that I was a sinner, even though you can ask anyone that knew me that I was the most well behaved person they knew, I guess the people I was staying with figured sin was catching and my stepfather had somehow infected me. I mean he had emptied a rifle at me the day I ran away, so one or both of us had to be wicked.

So I planned, and waited until we were visiting in southern Idaho, where I figured I could disappear easier. I left after midnight, my secret stash of clothes in a bag, headed down an old dirt road toward the local highway from the farm we were visiting, and there waiting for me was a lady I had seen at other gatherings of the family I was staying with, kind of the black sheep of the family, her name was Dolores, yeah that Dolores. She was sitting in her car having figured out what no one else had, waiting on me to flee.  She made me a deal on that deserted road that if I would put off running away she would figure out a way to have me live with her family. She said she had been trying ever since I had originally taken off, but because she was not attending a church regularly the people I was currently with figured  that my soul would be in danger. She said that she had a way and eventually she would get my sister who was living with a minister, another member of the family I was staying with, and actually the most evil family I have ever come across, probably why I have problems with established forms of religion to this day.

So I went to live in Council with Dolores and her family.  I started my 8th grade and met the best group of people I could ever hope for.  Not just my classmates, but a town full of people who made no judgment about me one way or the other and teachers who actually cared.  Dolores was teaching high school and was probably the most influential person in my life.  I went from C’s and D’s to straight A’s the end of my sophomore year in high school. I made some of the best friends of my life in Council, some I talk too regularly to this day. I excelled in sports, but I was also editor for the school paper two years in a row, junior class president, and on the student council my senior year, member of several clubs, and campaign manager for the winning candidate for student council, one of the captains of an undefeated football team, so Council created a whole new person. A lot of credit going to Dolores, who taught me integrity, never ever lied to me or once broke a promise she made to me. I will give you an example, one you will be hard pressed to equal. As some of you know, the Huffman’s and I moved away after football season my sophomore year. I loved Council, and I was now going from a class with an average if 29 students, to a sophomore class of 1,500 in Wenatchee Washington. I missed Council and was feeling sorry for myself one evening and bemoaning my poor, poor existence when Dolores looked at me and said, “look, you take all those C’s and make yourself a straight A student by the end of this school year, and I will move you back to Council before school starts next year.” She forgot all about it, I never mentioned it again, but I was a man on a mission. I did nothing but study. I didn’t date; go to parties, movies, or anything else. I got special permission to use a period a day to go down the road to the junior college and finish my German II class which was not offered at the high school. I used every other minute to be the best damn student anyone had ever seen. I did extra credit in every class, and aced every test, I left my sophomore year with a 5.0.  I presented my grades to Dolores who was impressed, but had never given a thought to moving back to Council. I reminded her of her promise and said these grades are a direct result of that promise. You cannot imagine the myriad emotions that crossed that women’s face in a matter of seconds. First surprise, then you see the memory of the promise and what that meant, then the realization that she was either going to break the first promise she had ever made me, or have family living in two states, at least for a while in order not to break that promise. By mid summer I was back in Council, and that is how the Huffman clan came back to Council. She made Melvin give up his foreman job at the Dalles dam being built on the Columbia River, the reason we moved in the first place, so he was back by winter of that same year.

So was able to return to the people and the town I loved, and also learned that being an A student was actually easier than being a C student. It just took an adjustment to never put off studying what you can until later. It also meant you did not have to cram for finals, a healthy and steady review to refresh your memory, but since you had taken the time to learn it right as it came to you, you were not trying to learn nine or 18 weeks of work in a week. I still had time for sports, extra curricular activities, and most importantly, dating!

During my junior year Melvin got his old business started back in California.

Dolores figured she had honored her promise now it was time for me to make the sacrifice and to leave Council again. I, being a selfish teenager, refused and being of sufficient age and having Dr. Edwards as a willing guardian, I stayed in Council. My Junior and Seniors years were probably the most outstanding in my life, so I cannot regret that decision, even though it hurt Dolores to the core, but we made up and when she died, I was there to give her what  support I could, and to Bob her second husband, who was devastated.

I know I got a little long winded here, but the moral of the story is, that I went from a person who thought of themselves as worthless, to a very confident young man due to the fact that I had the honor to grow up in Council with the people I did. I am adored by my wife of 35 years; I have a daughter I am very proud of. She was an honor student who is now an English teacher receiving her Masters in Literature this spring.  I survived over two tours in Nam, I live by a good set of moral rules, although I have some issues with religion,  I wore one employer out with 30 years of steady service, I have a second job of seven years with a company I love, I am not financially as well off as I could have been, but my life was and is full, I would not trade it in even if I could, and growing up in Council is the reason I am a steadfast husband, a good friend to have, and a pretty decent human being. So even though my house is falling down around my ears, and just as we were taking estimates to get it fixed up the money was gutted, I had to sit down and examine my life, and as I did I realized how great my life actually was and is. I am out of shape a little, put on some weight, but the doc say’s I am healthy,  I still ride big iron every day, 1850 cc of chrome and horsepower at the age of 62, I rarely am ever sick, and still not totally gray. What the hell do I have to be depressed about, so I am now working out, and am determined that my 60’s will be even better than ever.  If you are part of the Council I fondly remember, thank you for the gift of my life, I mean that sincerely. I have never shared these feeling before with anyone except Jim Mahon, who is my brother in this and any life, but that is another story.

There are things that make your blood  boil.  Then there are things that should have made your blood boil, but didn’t.  I will give you few examples, but first let me preface these examples by telling you that I am a former Vietnam veteran, a Sgt in the Marine Corps at the time, I served for over two tours. I am proud to have served, but the reasons are mixed, and have changed over the years. Simply put, and appropriate for subject matter I intend to discuss, is I fought to keep those I fought with alive, and even more so to make sure I survived.  I probably did not spend more than a minute worrying about Communism or it’s spread through out the world. This was the political cause, but had next to nothing to do with anyone actively competing to survive.
The first thing I should make clear is my disappointment in a military that asks me to serve, risk my life, and to always act with integrity while I do it. An honorable request to be sure.  And let me be quite clear here, I will not be saying we should not have been in Nam, or Afganistan, or Iraq. The reasons for our participation in these various indeavors is complex and cannot be explained by me in a short blog. What I will be discussing is a few things in which our military historically has failed its fighting men, time , and time again.
In WWI, WWII, they called it shell shock, and to be fair, they, the military, did admit of its existence, however treatment was basically, man up buddy, it’s over!
In Nam we were let down in a miriad of ways.. Our heroes were not given the medals they had earned in a public forum, but in small pricate functions so as not to be shoving it in the face of a public who was not supportive of the war. The V.A. hospitals were a nightmare for any wounded vet. To say that the care was sub-standard did not begin to describe the squalor and lack of care I would see every time I visited.
Then we really embarassed ourselves, Agent Orange, never heard of it. Oh yeah, that stuff we sprayed all over Vietnam. But it’s only harmful to plants. Did we spray it on humans, absolutely not, oh you have pictures, well it didn’t hurt them, I mean we sprayed it on some rats a couple months ago, they didn’t die. Of course they broke out in big red rashes and did not seem to be acting like healthy rats, but they didn’t die!  The gov’t continued on with this foolishness that fooled no one, however it was not a popular war, so no one cared! Thousands of veterans had reactions that would sicken you to list, never mind the experience from their exposure to Agent Orange. They never were treated properly, most were listed by the V.A. as melingerers or hypochondriacs, anything except lets see how we can help you.
Now we get to our first encounter with Iraq and their attempted take over of the oil fields in Kuwait.  A huge number of military personnel came back complaining of various but serious health issues. The one thing they had in common, they had all been in the same combat areas of that military deployment. Did the military help them, well if you call, man up it’s over, or this is stress, but stress you had bifore we sent you to fight in a war, nothing we are responsible for.  What a load of crap!
Today we have the current war. One of our present medical emergencies is head trauma. The method the enemy uses to harass our troops leaves a lot of limbs blown off or damaged, but also an increase in head trauma, brain damage caused by the extreme explosive pressure that had been released near the combatants head. The gov’t could not deny that the damage was the direct result of combat, but what can we do, they said, the brain is a complex organ and we don’t know how to treat it. The families had to embarrass the V.A. hospitals by pulling out their loved ones and at extreme personal expense and hardship proving that great improvements could be made if the proper medical people were involved.  So some improvements have been made at our gov’t sponsored levels, but only a little, and they still will not pay for care that has been proven to help!
So let me paraphrase, I do not have a problem with military service, I do not question that sometimes what we are doing is necessary, but when our men and women are put in harms way, only the best medical services available on the planet should be the medical services attending to the people you asked to die for you, because that is what you did.  There should be no excuses made, just how may we help you, and yes we will find a way to make it happen.

Thank you,

P.S.          My dad , Sgt Charles Love, misdiagnosed with dental problems for a couple of years, then found to have cancerous brain tumor which he died of when I was six years old. Not much was known of cancer and it’s cure so Dad would have probably not survived no matter what the diagnosis, it just goes to the point that the sharpest tools in the box are not going to be found in a military hospital.
